Fuzzy Bats!

Bat Appreciation Month - who knew that was a thing? I certainly didn’t! But why not celebrate these adorably spooky creatures in the spookiest fall month of October? Whether they’re vampires or just average little bats, these fuzzy bat friends are much more manageable pets than their living counterparts.

Supplies:

  • Large, fuzzy pom pom (the ones for winter hats work really well!)

  • Felt

  • Fabric glue or hot glue

  • Scissors

  • Sewing needle

  • Thread or embroidery floss

  • Pen/pencil/tailor’s chalk (optional)

  • Googly eyes or buttons (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Begin by tracing out the shape you want your bat wings to be. It’s easiest to trace one large shape (as pictured below) rather than two individual wings, but either way will work! I traced mine out on a piece of paper before cutting them out, but go right ahead and freehand it if you’d like to. Once you have your shape(s) perfected, cut out two of each (you can just fold the felt in half so you get even shapes). If you’d also like to add a face and ears onto your bat, feel free to trace and cut those pieces out of the felt as well.

  2. Sew or glue the two pieces of the wings together.

  3. If you’ve glued your wings, allow them to dry before proceeding to this step! Separate the fur of your pom pom so that you have a flat surface to affix your wings to and glue or sew them in place. Allow your glue to dry before proceeding to the next step.

  4. If you’d like to add ears and a face to your bat, you’ll want to separate the fur again and dab a little bit of glue onto each of your felt pieces before affixing it to your pom pom.

  5. If you’d like to be able to hang your bat, use a needle and some embroidery floss to create a loop. The best way to do this is by passing the whole needle through your pom pom from the top down and then pass the needle back through from bottom to top. Remove the needle and tie the ends of your embroidery floss together in a loop.

  6. Allow all of your glue to dry and you’ve got yourself a fuzzy new friend!
