Upcycled Tin Can Succulent Planter

If you’ve been as obsessed with Animal Crossing New Horizons as I have this past year, you’re bound to know about the adorable little tin can succulent planter that you can craft in game! Now that succulent season is finally here, I thought it would be a fun way to celebrate the game by bringing that little DIY to life! Instead of using clumps of weeds at the DIY bench though, we’ll be using succulents of your choice.

Supplies:

  • Clean tin can
  • Clean pebbles or marbles
  • Potting soil
  • A few succulents
  • Paint (optional)
  • Paintbrush (optional)

Instructions:

  1. If you haven’t already, remove the label from your tin can and wash it out with soap and water, being careful of the possibly sharp edge of the can opening. If you take the label off and have a dishwasher, you can just throw it in with your next load!
  2. Once it’s all clean and dry, if you’re planning to decorate it, now would be the time to do so. You can paint it, tie ribbon around it, draw on it, leave it plain, or whatever else your heart desires! Just be sure to leave the inside clean and free of paint or other crafting materials.
  3. Fill about a third of your can with clean pebbles or marbles for drainage then top it off to about a quarter to half inch from the top with potting soil - the spare room is to make it easier for planting your succulents and adding soil around them.
  4. Remove your succulents from their pots carefully so as to avoid breaking or damaging them and then place them into the soil where you’d like them to be. You can experiment and move them around to see what kind of arrangement you like best, but once you have them in place, you can add a little more potting soil around the bottoms of the plants to keep them in place.
  5. Once you’ve settled on your final arrangement, all that’s left is to care for your succulents and enjoy your adorable planter! Refer to the care cards that likely came with them or just give them a little water once you notice the soil getting dry or the leaves losing their firmness (usually about once a week).

Tips:

  • If you don’t have a green thumb, you can always buy or make fake succulents to fill your planter - if you opt for this route, you don’t need the potting soil, so just fill up your tin can with marbles or clean and dry pebbles to keep them in place.
  • If you want to add extra drainage you can (carefully) use a hammer and nail to poke a few holes through the bottom before filling it up.
  • I like to tape the care instructions to the bottom or back side of the pots I keep my plants in - that way if I ever forget what they need, I always have it right there for easy reference.
  • If any leaves break off of your succulents, you can just plant it in the soil, water it, and grow an entirely new plant!
  • If you have any leftover succulents, you can always plant them in another tin can or pot of your choice!
