Feminism and the law

I wonder if the first two female Supreme Court justices knew how important their legacies would become. This really was a case of a woman becoming everything she ever wanted to be, and in an age when women didn’t have loud voices, or many choices. They wanted to improve and change the law, and debate the finer points of the Constitution. But did they expect to become so important to the feminist movement? Both jurists were working women, and before that was common in America. Both worked because it was something they wanted to do, and they contributed in their respective areas. But to break the ceiling and become a judge on the highest court in the land was a real had up for all women, regardless of career or work status. The bulk of our discussion centered on women’s and minority issues, and how the two tried to create a more level playing field for those who weren’t white males. We did agree that the book was a little dry, and would have benefitted from the inclusion of more personal thoughts from both women, on their lives and work. But the author did a fine job of relating the history and times of these two trailblazers, and we all learned new information, both about the law and how it is made.
