I am new to science writing, and to Mary Roach as well, so this book was a double pleasure for me. In my personal opinion, the book was well written and researched, and the topic was interesting. With that said, this book is not going to be everyone's cup of tea. There is talk of cadavers, maggots and filth flies, death and stink bombs. But what really comes through is all the things society has gained courtesy of the military. We have waterproof fabrics, the Internet, vehicles that can withstand a direct hit, and numerous medical advances. The military has a hitsory of learning from history, and today's soldiers are better equiped, fed and cared for than any others. But they still face the possibility of catastrophic injuries, both physical and mental. One of the more interesting, and I think inevitable side tracks we went down during our discussion was the possibility of war being conducted exclusively through drones and/or robots. This would keep the troops out of danger, but adds a very real problem: how are the artificial intelligences programmed? As in...how do they decide if someone is friend or foe? Or even more worrying...who lives and who does not? A slippery slope, which I don't want to be on the edge of.
