Reading, reading and more reading

As we met for our discussion, one thing stood out. No one really liked the book. Everyone had a critique: too wordy, didn’t have enough stories to prove points made, too academic, could have focused more on learning disabilities, and the list could go on. Granted, this was the author’s first foray into writing for the general public, but I think she did make some good points. Reading is a complex process we have to be taught. It does not come naturally, like speech. Building a vocabulary and recognizing words and their meanings is no small feat. Some humans pick up the necessary skills quickly and easily, and some do not. Reading is probably on par with learning language: it makes dealing with the world much easier. But not everyone has the proper pathways in their brains to learn. Different methods are deployed, and special attention is given to those who are less quick to pick up the task. The politics of education also play a role, as does the home life of a student. With all the things that have to go right in our quest to learn to read…it’s miraculous when it works.
