What is an Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan, or ILL, is a method of obtaining books/materials from other area libraries. There is no charge for this service to our patrons. The Library searches for the item in various databases to locate another library system which owns the item and is willing to lend the item to the Lisle Library District. There are some restrictions (see below).
How long does it take?
Lisle Library is committed to providing fast access to library resources. The majority of requests can be processed and filled in approximately 5-7 working days. Unfortunately, some requests take longer, despite our best efforts. There is no such thing as a "rush order."
How do I place an ILL?
- Call Adult Services at 630-971-1675 ext. 1508 or email us at: adultservices@lislelibrary.org
- Call Youth Services at 630-971-1675 ext. 3001 or email us at: youthservices@lislelibrary.org
- Stop by in person. If you are contacting us by phone or email, please provide your personal information: full name, phone number, and library barcode number.
Can I get a newly published book through ILL?
Generally, no. Patrons from the home library that has the newly published book are given first priority. Give the item at least six months from the date of being published before you request it from Lisle Library District.
Is there a charge to ILL materials?
Generally, no. However, some out-of-state requests may have a minimal charge. We will make every attempt to provide free sources for materials, and most requests should be free of charge. Any out-of-state loan that may have a charge associated with it, will require a patron's has consent beforehand. (Patrons will be charged this fee regardless of whether they physically pick up the material or not. It is a processing/delivery fee).
Article photocopy ILL requests will remain .10 per page, unless otherwise indicated.
How do I know when it arrives and where do I pick up my ILL?
You will be notified by phone, text, or email, and your ILL will be held at the Circulation Services Desk. For questions, please call 630-971-1675 ext. 2007 or email circ@lislelibrary.org.
How long can I keep an ILL?
The length of the loan is set by the lending library. The due date is noted on each item as well as on the checkout receipt.
Can I renew an ILL?
Renewals are possible, but it is up to the individual lending library. Borrowers must contact Circulation Services at 630-971-1675 ext. 2007 before the due date and we then contact the lending library for a renewal date.
Are there restrictions?
Interlibrary Loans are for Lisle Library card holders (Library card information/eligibility below). Reciprocal borrowers have to contact their own library to request materials. Some types of materials are not loaned between libraries. Generally, we do not request from other libraries books that we already own or have on order. For these materials, an LLD staff member may place this book "On Hold" for you.
Card Eligibility
All Lisle Library District (LLD) residents are eligible for a library card. The District includes most of Lisle, including unincorporated subdivisions such as Four Lakes, Woodridge Estates and The Meadows. Portions of unincorporated Naperville, including Steeple Run, are also included in the District. LLD residents pay taxes to the District, which is reflected on their tax bill. Everyone in the household is entitled to a library card, regardless of age.
- A photo ID and current proof of residency (lease, utility bill or checkbook) presented in person is necessary to obtain a library card. A driver's license or state ID is sufficient for proof if the address is current.
- Children under the age of 18 need to have a parent/guardian present when registering.
